Sustainability Statement

Sydney Markets: Our Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

At Sydney Markets, we don't just talk about sustainability; we live it every day. As an integral part of Australia's horticultural supply chain, we recognise our responsibility to lead by example. Our comprehensive approach to sustainability encompasses waste management, renewable energy, community engagement, and more. Here's how we're making a difference:

Comprehensive Waste Management

We've set the gold standard in waste management, achieving an impressive 70% recycling rate of all waste generated on-site. Our specialised Green Point collection facility handles around 13,000 tonnes of organic waste annually. This waste is diverted to local farmers to feed livestock, donated to food charities such as Food Bank, Second Bite and OzHarvest to feed vulnerable Australians or transported to an anaerobic digester facility, where it's converted into green energy and fertiliser.

Leading the Charge in Renewable Energy

Our commitment to renewable energy is second to none. With 8,594 solar panels installed at our Homebush This initiative allows us to operate on 11% renewable energy, equivalent to powering 1,300 houses. In terms of carbon savings, this is akin to taking approximately 2,500 cars off the road annually.

Community and Industry Engagement

We're not keeping our sustainability achievements to ourselves. We actively share our best practices with other businesses, local councils, and other market operators. Our experience in source separation and responsible waste management have been shared with our partners around Australia and Internationally.

Awards and Accolades

Our sustainability efforts have not gone unnoticed. We've been honoured with numerous awards, including the NSW Government Green Globe Awards for Business Leadership and the Food Waste Management Award by the World Union of Wholesale Markets.

By championing these initiatives, Sydney Markets is not just reducing its environmental impact but also setting the benchmark for sustainability best practices in New South Wales. Together, we can create a more sustainable future for all.
